Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Adverbs tell how, when, or where. In second grade, we usually identify and use adverbs that modify verbs. The first example shows how an adverb modifies a verb. Example two shows how adverbs can modify other adverbs, and example three shows how adverbs can modify adjectives.
Example One: We carefully walked outside yesterday.
How did we walk? carefully
Where did we walk? outside
When did we walk? yesterday
In this sentence, the three adverbs all modify the verb -walked.

Example Two: We walked very slowly.
In this sentence, very is an adverb that modifies another adverb- slowly.

In this sentence, really is an adverb that modifies the adjective- beautiful.
